Fundamentally, keyword density is the number of times a targeted keyword is used in the web page content. It's normally expressed as a percentage of all of the words on the page. Keyword density plays a major role in helping the search engines understand what the page is about, otherwise known as relevancy. Your site could be considered spam or artificial if a keyword phrase is used too often causing the search engines to not display it in search results. Many people utilize keyword density to help them with search engine optimization which is another subject for another day.

Here is how to calculate the keyword's density on a web page. Let’s say your content is an article which contains 100 words (do not include any html code), your target keyword appears in the article 5 times. Simply divide the number of times the keyword appears (5) by the total number of words (100) to get an answer of .05. This would translate into 5%. The percentage can be found by multiplying our answer (.05) by 100 which equals 5 or 5 percent.

The general consensus of an acceptable optimum keyword density is between 3 and 5 percent, in order for the search engines to recognize the keyword and know what the page is about. If you ever exceed 5 percent, keep in mind your page may get de-indexed and considered a spam site.

Don't forget this applies to each web page and its respective keyword or keywords. Always ensure that each page of your site and its keyword or keywords stay within the optimum 3-5% and you site should be okay.

Easy Way to Check Word Counts on a Web Page

Copy all of the text off of the web page and paste it into a word processor such as Microsoft Word or Open Office Word and you should be able to see the total word count in the status bar. Sometimes if you can't see a total word count in the status bar you can find a word count function up in one of the menus. Now that you have the total word count, you can use the "find" feature from the upper menu and enter your keyword to find. When it finds the first keyword, keep using the "find next" function and keep a running count. Now that you have a keyword total, use the formulas above to figure out the density percentage.
