Many website owners want to get their websites listed highly for search terms. Your website will never generate sales if you pick unrelated keywords. The most important part of an online business is keyword research. If you pass up keyword research in the beginning, you will find yourself passing up a lot of cash.
Many people claim that you should start off with long tail keywords. I don’t know who came up with this reasoning, but it’s not very smart. Many keywords that are long tail never get searched at all. I have noticed that there many new website owners that optimize for search terms that never get searched.
You should focus on finding keywords that get a decent amount of search traffic, but rarely anyone is optimizing for them. It does not matter whether they are long tail or not. The length of a keyword does not indicate how competitive it is. There are actually some five word keywords that have a lot of competition, while some one word keywords never get searched.
I will advise you how to do keyword research the right way. I look for keywords that I would want to rank well for. Secondly, I use a keyword research tool called Keyword Elite and I find how much each keyword gets search per month. I do not use the Google Keyword Tool because I don’t think it’s very accurate.
After that, I make a search for the keywords that have good search volume. I use Yahoo to examine the websites that have the number one position for their inbound links. After putting the website into Yahoo for analyzing, I check to see how many links the site has with the search keyword.
If the links are not the keyword search term, then I know that the website owner in the first position is relatively clueless. I come to the conclusion that the website owner can be easily outranked with links and time.
Many new webmasters fall under the logic that it is going to be extremely time consuming and difficult to rank well for terms. It is important to realize that you probably know more about search engine optimization than the person who is ranking number one. It is pretty easy to take the number one ranking and start earning money, if you find the right keywords.
